Why did my first root canal fail?
Most teeth have two or three root canals, and some have more. Without magnification and 3D imaging, a thin curved canal is easy to miss. Bacteria survive in that untreated branch, and eventually the infection returns. It is not a sign of negligence. It is a complexity that requires specialist equipment to address.
Is a re-treatment more painful than the first?
No, and often it is easier than the first one. Because the tooth has already had a root canal, the nerve is no longer intact. The anaesthetic is purely precautionary. Patients are usually surprised by how comfortable the procedure is.
Is it better to just pull the tooth and get an implant?
Only if the tooth root itself is cracked or destroyed beyond repair. An implant is a good solution, but it is a significantly bigger procedure, takes longer to heal, and costs more. If re-treatment can save the natural tooth, it is almost always worth attempting first.
